Question
"What is your earliest memory?"
My earliest memory is of waking before sunrise with my mother to fetch water. She sang quietly as she walked. The air was cold and the stars were still out.
Question
"What advice would you give your younger self?"
Be patient. The things worth having take longer than you expect. And write things down — memory is not as reliable as it feels in the moment.
Question
"What are you most proud of?"
My children. Every single one of them worked harder than I ever did and went further than I ever dreamed I could.

"We used this at my grandparents' 60th anniversary dinner. Everyone recorded a story on the night. It was the best gift we could have given them — and ourselves."

Common questions

Does the family member need to download the app?
No. When you send a question via WhatsApp, the recipient just taps a link that opens in their browser. No app download, no account — they just tap record and speak.
Is my family's data private?
Yes. Your archive is completely private. Only people you explicitly invite can see your family's stories. We never share your data with third parties or use it for advertising.
What if my grandparent isn't confident with technology?
Roots is designed for exactly this. The web page they see is as simple as possible — one big record button. If they can use WhatsApp, they can record a story. Many of our users are 70s, 80s and beyond.
What languages does Roots support?
The app interface is currently in English. Voice recordings can be made in any language — transcription works across dozens of languages including Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu, Spanish, French and more.
Can I export my family's stories?
Yes. You can export transcripts as text and download audio recordings at any time. Your stories belong to your family — not to us.
Is Roots available on Android?
The app is currently available on iOS. Android is on our roadmap — join the waitlist below and we'll let you know the moment it launches.
